AT&T FORMS ASSOCIATION WITH KDD OF JAPAN, SINGAPORE TELECOM TO EXTEND SERVICES TO MULTINATIONAL FIRMS

 WASHINGTON, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In a major new thrust to meet the communications needs of global companies, AT&T (NYSE: T) today introduced the first voice and data services to span the globe with common features and common standards of performance.
 AT&T said its WorldSource family of customized business communications services will be available later this year in North America and the Asia/Pacific region through an association of leading telecommunications companies.
 AT&T also said it would extend WorldSource dedicated services to Europe next year in order to fully serve the communications needs of global companies.
 The WorldSource family of services will eliminate many of the difficulties multinational companies now face primarily due to technical differences among telephone administrations.
 Initial services, available later this year, include virtual network services for voice and data communications, highly reliable private line services for data or voice, and frame-relay service for high-speed data transmission.
 Customers will enjoy one-stop shopping for ordering, provisioning and maintenance around the world. Billing for WorldSource services will be consolidated in a customer's choice of country, language and currency.
 AT&T announced its plans in news conferences today in Tokyo, Brussels and Washington.
 Speaking in Tokyo, AT&T Vice Chairman Randall Tobias said: "The customers for these services have operations around the world. They want communications services that give them global capabilities. And they want them now. WorldSource services offer a new level of global service and global reach to these global customers."
 Speaking in Brussels, Vic Pelson, president of AT&T's Communications Services Group, said, "AT&T is committed to serving global customers no matter where in the world they do business. Our commitment underscores the critical role communications play in our customers' global competitiveness, and indeed the lead role our customers' play in steering this industry."
 Earlier today in Tokyo, AT&T joined with Japan's principal international telecommunications carrier, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd. (KDD), and Singapore Telecom to announce that they have agreed to form the WorldPartners association to provide WorldSource services within the Asia/Pacific region, as well as between that region and other parts of the world. The three carriers expect to spend more than $100 million over the next few years to bring WorldSource services to customers.
 Australia's long-distance company Telstra (formerly AOTC), Unitel of Canada, and Korea Telecom plan to join the WorldPartners association.
 The association, which will be headquartered in New York, is open to new members from around the world, and plans to provide WorldSource services in more countries as new members are added.
 Later this year, member companies will begin providing WorldSource services in a controlled introduction to a number of business customers, including Goodyear, Honeywell, LSI Logic, Motorola, PaineWebber, Unisys, and United Parcel Service.
 AT&T, KDD and Singapore Telecom also have agreed to create an operating organization within WorldPartners to provide a range of support capabilities for association members. Such capabilities will include clearinghouse functions for billing, ordering, provisioning, maintenance and customer support.
 The operating organization also will ensure that members provide WorldSource services of uniformly high quality. Simon Krieger of AT&T will become president and chief operating officer of the operating organization.
 "AT&T is committed to serve global customers globally," said Joseph Nacchio, president of AT&T's Business Communications Services, who spoke in Washington.
 "In North America, Japan and throughout Asia we will do so through the members of the WorldPartners association. In Europe, serving customers will require close collaboration with each country's telecommunications operator, and we are open to more formal partnerships with like-minded operators. We are also exploring ways to extend WorldSource services to Latin America and elsewhere."
 In Brussels earlier today, AT&T announced that it would extend WorldSource services to multinational companies in Europe in 1994. The company emphasized that it prefers to serve European multinational companies through partnerships with local telecommunications operators. It pointed to the WorldPartners association as an appropriate vehicle for such partnerships.
 Until such partnerships are established, AT&T said it will deploy its own systems to bring WorldSource services to its multinational customers in Europe.
 As part of this action, AT&T will add to its existing network management centers in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands by installing systems in key European commercial centers to provide service for multinational customers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden.
 AT&T plans to hire or redeploy more than 650 technicians and sales personnel in Europe to provide customer support for the new services, which will be available next year.
 The company said that delivering the new services in Europe will require a total investment of about $350 million over five years.
 "We believe the extension of WorldSource services to Europe will be welcomed both by the customers and by the European Commission," said Nacchio. "This is consistent with the EC's regulatory framework."
