AT&T EXTENDS CELLULAR PRIVACY PRODUCT LINE TO PROVIDE END-TO-END PRIVACY AND ENCRYPTION

GREENSBORO, N.C., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T has broadened its Cellular Privacy System with new products offering over-the-air privacy, end-to-end privacy and end-to-end encryption.
The new products make the AT&T Cellular Privacy System a comprehensive solution to cellular security. "The AT&T Cellular Privacy System now fills the needs of any cellular user who wants to shut eavesdroppers out of their calls," said Ed Hickey, AT&T Vice President, Secure Communications Systems.
"Whatever level of privacy they need, whatever application they want -- we can support it."
AT&T extended the product line today by introducing two new products at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association show in Dallas:
-- The AT&T Privacy-Capable Transportable Cellular Telephone 9100 is a bag phone that operates with the AT&T Cellular Privacy System to scramble the cellular signal for over-the-air privacy. It can also be mounted in vehicles as a mobile telephone.
The AT&T 9100 also operates with the AT&T Telephone Security Device to provide end-to-end digital encryption, a higher level of security comparable to that of the government's secure-telephone program. The Telephone Security Device weighs about 1.5 pounds and fits easily into the Model 9100's bag.
The AT&T 9100 and its privacy module will be available in April through cellular carriers and dealers as well as a variety of retail channels. The phone is competitively priced with comparable models; retail price for the privacy unit is $795.
-- The AT&T Fixed Cellular Privacy Unit provides end-to-end, carrier-independent cellular privacy capability. The unit connects to the user's PBX or key telephone system to descramble calls from privacy- equipped cellular phones.
It also connects those conventional telephone systems to cellular systems for such uses as emergency communications when telephone land lines are down and for least-cost routing of calls when cellular calls are more cost-efficient than land-line calls.
The unit is produced by Telular Group L.P. of Wilmette, Ill. Telular will incorporate AT&T privacy technology into its product line, and AT&T will market Telular fixed-cellular products. The two companies plan to develop additional products for cellular privacy and related applications.
The AT&T Fixed Cellular Privacy Unit will be available in the second quarter through cellular carriers and other cellular channels.
These new products complement the over-the-air privacy products that AT&T introduced in December.
AT&T cellular privacy and encryption technology was developed by AT&T Secure Communications Systems. AT&T secure products protect voice, data, fax, cellular and videocommunications.
