Joyce Gab-Kneeland, senior vice president, AT&T Broadband, Greater Chicago Market, today announced AT&T Broadband is the winner of the 2001 Beacon Award, in the category of Education: Web Site, for its website commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy-Nixon Debates. Sponsored by the Cable Television Public Affairs Association (CTPAA), the national Beacon Awards competition recognizes excellence in public affairs throughout the telecommunications industry.

Gab-Kneeland commented, "The Great Debate and Beyond" was a commemoration of a significant event in the history of politics that literally changed the way we view and select officeholders to this day."

Honoring the 40th anniversary of the first televised presidential debate, AT&T Broadband, the Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC), and Sears sponsored a dinner and panel discussion with surviving participants of the first debate between Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Distinguished panelists included Don Hewitt, director of the first debate; Herbert Klein, media advisor to Nixon; Howard K. Smith, legendary news correspondent; Theodore Sorensen, policy advisor/legal counsel/speechwriter to Kennedy; and Sander Vanocur, journalist at the first debate. The event was held at the CBS studios in Chicago, site of the original debate. Additionally, AT&T Broadband aired the original Kennedy-Nixon debate through local origination to over one million of its customers in the Chicagoland area and, working with MBC hosted an interactive Website featuring videos of presidential debates from 1960 to 1996.

From the 442 entries received in this year's Beacon Award competition, 95 finalists were chosen by cable public affairs professionals in an extensive two phase judging process. The overwhelming number of entries continues to demonstrate the cable industry's commitment to public affairs and represent company initiatives implemented over the past year in the areas of community, customer, employee and industry relations, as well as education and government affairs.

The winners were announced at a gala ceremony on April 24, during CTPAA's annual conference, FORUM 2001 Public Affairs: Completing the {Value} Equation. FORUM 2001 was held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC, April 22-25.

"These award-winning projects reflect the cable industry's strong commitment to public affairs; to continue to provide quality entertainment, technological advances, and educational initiatives to communities across the country," said Steven Jones, Executive Director, CTPAA.
