 AT&T BELL LABS NAMES NETRAVALI EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
 MURRAY HILL, N.J., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Arun N. Netravali has


been named executive director of the Communications Sciences Research Division at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
 He succeeds Robert W. Lucky, who is retiring after 31 years of service and has been named vice president of applied research at Bellcore in Livingston, N.J.
 Bellcore provides research and technical support for the regional Bell telecommunications companies. AT&T Bell Laboratories is the R&D arm of AT&T (NYSE: T).
 Dr. Netravali, who is currently director of the Computing Systems Research and Technology Conversion Laboratories, will assume his new post on October 1.
 In recent years, Dr. Netravali has been responsible for research and development of AT&T's high-definition television (HDTV) system.
 In addition, Dr. Netravali has been active in research on communications networks, distributed computing, programming languages and interactive systems.
 He joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1972 as a member of technical staff, became a department head in 1978, and assumed his most recent post in 1983. He took on the HDTV assignment in 1990.
 Dr. Netravali received his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India, and his master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University in Houston.
 He has been an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1984, and has taught graduate courses at City College of New York, Columbia University and Rutgers University.
 Dr. Netravali is the author of more than 100 papers and holds over 50 patents.
