AT&T BELL LABORATORIES ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT OF TWO SOFTWARE COMPONENTS

 MURRAY HILL, N.J., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Two unique software components that are used to make other software programs fault-tolerant have been developed at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
 "The ability to recover from transient errors and other faults in software is the best way to enhance system reliability," said Larry Bernstein, a Bell Labs executive director and chief technical officer for AT&T's Operations Systems business unit.
 "Fault tolerance is common in hardware and in operating systems, but is generally too costly for many software systems," Bernstein said. "To our knowledge, these are the first general purpose software modules. And they set a trend toward low-cost fault tolerance in user-level software."
 AT&T is using the two components to enhance the fault-tolerance capability of some of its newer products, and is exploring the possibility of marketing the components externally.
 Based on the UNIX operating system, the components are titled watchd and libft. They were created at Bell Labs by Yennun Huang, a member of technical staff in the Software Technology Center.
 "This is truly seminal work, and is an outstanding example of AT&T's ability to create innovative and useful new software," said Chandra Kintala, a supervisor in the center.
 "The components provide for automatic on-line retry as an effective way to achieve high system availability," Kintala said.
 Software fault tolerance can be provided in an application whether or not the underlying hardware or operating system is fault-tolerant. And it is sometimes more economical to provide fault tolerance in the software than in the hardware.
 Watchd and libft separate fault detection, process restart, and volatile data recovery facilities from the application functions. They provide different levels of fault tolerance with minimal effort and high flexibility.
 Watchd is composed of unique distributed algorithms that can run on a single machine or a network of machines. It continually watches the life of an application, and when it detects that it has crashed or hung, it recovers that application at an initial internal state or at the point at which data was last saved.
 Libft is a library of C language functions that can be used in the application programs to specify and checkpoint critical data, recover the checkpointed data, log events, do exception handling, and do N- version programming.
 One example of AT&T's current use of the two components is its New Generation Testing system that troubleshoots 800 services and can pinpoint problems on up to 42 lines simultaneously.
 "When we first heard about watchd and libft, it sounded too good to be true," said Peter Cervelli, division manager of Inbound Product Development. "In practice, they provide software tolerance, improve hardware tolerance, reduce our delivery interval through re-use, and have saved about three peoples' worth of work for a good part of the year. We are now looking at other ways to use this capability."
