AT&T BECOMES FIRST TO WIN TWO MALCOLM BALDRIGE NATIONAL QUALITY AWARDS
 FOR EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY MANAGEMENT
AT&T (NYSE: T) is the first corporation ever to win two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards for excellence in quality management. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, President Bush named AT&T's Universal Card Services as the winner in the service category, and AT&T's Network Systems Transmission the winner in manufacturing.
The Baldrige awards were established in 1987 in memory of the late Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige. Baldrige advocated the idea of renewing excellence in American business by making quality an integral part of corporate strategy.
"Three years ago, we challenged ourselves to redefine quality from our customer's perspective," said AT&T Chairman Robert E. Allen at a news conference to acknowledge the awards. "We adopted the Baldrige criteria as a benchmark and set 1994 as our goal to apply for the award. I am delighted that two AT&T units have actually won two years ahead of schedule."
The winning units operate two very different AT&T businesses, but share a strong commitment to quality management and a devotion to ever- improving customer satisfaction.
AT&T's Transmission Systems unit manufactures telecommunications equipment. The unit is one of the company's oldest and is at the core of AT&T's traditional business, its worldwide long-distance network. AT&T's Transmission Systems employs 12,000 associates worldwide.
AT&T Universal Card Services, one of the company's newest businesses, markets and provides customer services for AT&T's combination long-distance calling card and general purpose credit card. The AT&T Universal Card has grown rapidly since its introduction in March 1990 and has become the industry's second-largest credit card issuer. AT&T Universal Card Services employs 2,500 associates around the country.
Quality has become a prime concern of many Michigan businesses over the past several years, most notably in high-technology and service industries, and especially in the automotive industry. Quality management has become so important that Ford Motor Company uses the principle as one of its advertising slogans (Quality is Job 1).
AT&T is proving that product quality and customer satisfaction are the keys to business success. Other AT&T business units use the same principles as the award winners to direct their operations. Managers in these units would be happy to answer questions about quality management. AT&T has offices in Southfield, East Lansing and Grand Rapids.
