AT&T ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF USADIRECT SERVICE IN-LANGUAGE
NEW YORK, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- At press conferences held in Warsaw, Budapest and Beijing, AT&T (NYSE: T) announced expansion of its AT&T USADirect(R) Service In-Language. The service gives callers in these countries direct access to an AT&T operator in the United States who speaks Polish, Hungarian or Mandarin Chinese and can assist in completing a call to the United States.
With the introduction of the service in China alone, an additional 35 million households in China will have international calling capability for the first time.
The new services join AT&T USADirect Service in Spanish to provide an easy and affordable way for local residents to call relatives and friends in the United States.
To access the service, customers dial a special USADirect access code and give the AT&T operator the phone number and name of the person they want to reach. The operator will place the call and bill it to the person accepting the call in the United States.
In Poland, calls can be made from any phone with international direct dial capability. To access the service, a caller must dial 0, wait for a second dial tone, and then dial the number 010-480-0112. From some large businesses and hotels in Warsaw, a customer simply dials 010-480-0112.
Last year, AT&T introduced the service to nine Latin American countries, adding Spanish-speaking operators to place calls to friends and relatives in the United States. Today, the service is available in 13 countries.
This new in-language service has been useful in countries where many residents do not have phones in their homes or a means to pay for their calls. The partnership with AT&T benefits the telephone administrations in these countries by providing a high quality service with skilled operators who speak the preferred language of the caller and can assist in placing their calls.

Originally, AT&T USADirect Service was introduced to provide American travelers and Americans living abroad with an easy way to call the United States and save money on calls and hotel surcharges. Callers are connected directly to an English-speaking AT&T operator who will place an AT&T Calling Card or collect call.
In Hungary, calls can be made from virtually any phone including home phones, calling centers and public telephones. A coin or pre-paid calling card is required to use a public telephone. To access the service, a caller must dial 00, wait for a second dial tone, and then dial 800-01112.
In China, calls can be made from virtually any phone, including home phones, calling centers and other public telephones. To access the service, a caller need only dial 10810.
In all cases, after the special number is dialed, an AT&T operator in the United States who speaks either Polish, Hungarian or Mandarin Chinese will answer, take the phone number and name of the person called, and place the call. Calls will be billed to the person receiving the call.
Callers using the service will reach a skilled AT&T operator who speaks their preferred language and can assist in placing their calls to relatives and friends in the United States.
"We are pleased to offer this service in cooperation with our partners in the telephone administrations; Telekomunikacja Polska S.A., the Hungarian Telecommunications Company and the Directorate General of Telecommunications," said Margaret J. Barrett, director global consumer services, AT&T. "Together we are making it easier for the residents of these countries to keep in touch with relatives and friends in the United States."

 AT&T USADirect Service Call Demonstrations
To explain and demonstrate AT&T USADirect (R) Service in Chinese, AT&T continued the recent launch of the service with events on Saturday, April 25 in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. At the events, staffed by AT&T employees from 8 countries, participants were given free calls to friends and relatives in the United States.
The International Telephone Plaza in Beijing was packed with more than 800 city residents who started lining up at 3:15 a.m. in order to get a free call. Many of those making calls typically don't have an opportunity to talk with family members in the United States. One caller said he hadn't spoken to his relatives in the United States in 50 years.
Shanghai and Guangzhou each drew crowds of about 1,000 people. In Shanghai, the first caller was 93-year-old Yuan Gengbao, who came at 9 p.m. the first night before the event to get a coupon which would entitle him to a free call. He was the first of nearly 400 people who placed calls from that city.
The calls proved to be very emotional, connecting many fiends and loved ones. Callers ranged from those needing directory assistance to find a telephone number in the United States, to a person whose daughter is a student in California, to a gentleman who was an AT&T Bell labs student intern 40 years ago and was anxious to practice his rusty English language skills with attendants.
AT&T's USADirect Service in Chinese was launched April 22. With the service, calls can be made to the Untied States with the assistance of a Chinese speaking AT&T operator. Calls can be made from virtually any phone, including home phones, calling centers and other public telephones. To access the service, a caller need only dial 10810. An AT&T operator in the United States, who speaks Chinese, will answer and place the call. Calls will be billed to the person accepting the call.
