AT&T ANNOUNCES CELLULAR SYSTEM SERVICE FOR XIAN, CAPITAL CITY OF SHAANXI
PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) announced it has supplied a cellular system, cut into service today, for Xian, the capital city of Shaanxi province.
The AT&T AUTOPLEX (R) System 1000, consisting of a mobile switching center (MSC) and three base stations (cell sites), will provide Xian with their first cellular communications network. The system will initially serve 2,000 subscribers.
In addition to supplying Xian with cellular infrastructure equipment, AT&T Network Systems has signed three other contracts with local posts and telecommunications (P&T) agencies to supply AUTOPLEX cellular systems in the Northwest region of China (PRC).
These AMPS-based systems are expected to be in operation by the end of this year, and can serve about 8,000 subscribers in that region.
"As the PRC's economy grows -- so does its need for forward-looking, flexible communications systems," said Niels Favre, vice president, AT&T Network Wireless Systems. "We are delighted to work with the People's Republic of China to provide a cellular communications system that will offer P&T customers access to modern, efficient wireless service, and we look forward to continuing this mutually beneficial relationship."
To commemorate the event, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in Xian today, and the first call was made from Xian to Lintong, using AT&T cellular telephones. AT&T consumer products is providing cellular telephones to P&T customers as part of the contract.
Xian, well-known as a major tourist attraction because of the Qing Dynasty terra-cotta soldiers discovered there, is also a regional telecommunications hub. It boasts a major Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) switching office, a telecommunications university, and an MPT research and manufacturing facility.
AT&T will provide full system support which includes planning, installation, maintenance and training.
AT&T Network Systems is a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of network telecommunications products, and offers communications service providers virtually everything they need to build and operate their networks.
AUTOPLEX equipment is manufactured in the United States at the company's facility in Columbus, Ohio.
