AT&T AND SRI LANKA PLACE GATEWAY SWITCH IN OPERATION
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sri Lanka Telecom and

AT&T (NYSE: T) today placed into service a mobile AT&T 5ESS(R) gateway switch at Sri Lanka Telecom headquarters, expanding the country's international calling capacity by more than 50 percent.
The 5ESS switch, developed by AT&T Bell Laboratories and provided by AT&T Network Systems, is on loan to Sri Lanka Telecom to help alleviate international calling congestion pending installation of a new international exchange in 1993. Four hundred new trunks, augmenting the capacity of the existing exchange, are expected to more than double the current 30-percent call completion rate.
The ceremony at which the AT&T digital switch was placed into service was attended by Sri Lanka's Telecommunications Minister A.M.S. Adhikari, Telecommunications Development Minister Harendra Correa, U.S. Ambassador Marion W. Creekmore Jr., and AT&T Network Systems Vice President James G. Cosgrove.
At the ceremony in Sri Lanka, Adhikari placed a call to Sri Lanka's ambassador in Washington D.C., and Creekmore placed a second call to Dan Carroll, Switching Systems president, AT&T Network Systems, also in the United States.
AT&T's mobile 5ESS gateway switch is housed in a container and can be flown or driven anywhere and connected to the local telephone network in a matter of a few hours. It can be configured to provide up to 10,000 lines of service and can function as a local, toll or international gateway exchange. More than 45 million lines of AT&T's 5ESS digital switch are in service in 26 countries.
The mobile 5ESS was unveiled in California last year, and to date seven units have been shipped. Two are in Kuwait; two are in the Dominican Republic; and two are located in California, where they are used by Pacific Bell to provide telecommunications services in emergency or disaster situations.
