 AT&T 800 SERVICE -- 25 YEARS AND COUNTING
 PHILADELPHIA, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) is using this

year, the 25th anniversary of its 800 Service, to reflect on the impact toll-free calling has had on consumer habits and business developments over the years.
"Toll-free calling was invented in 1967 by AT&T for use by large companies who wanted to pay for their customers' calls," said Ricka Nassikas, AT&T's area sales director for business network services. "That year, Americans dialed 7 million 800 numbers; more than 11 billion calls are projected for this year alone," she said.
Toll-free calling has sparked entire industries. For example, catalog companies use 800 numbers as their invitation to shop 24 hours a day. And AT&T International 800 Service, available from 64 countries, is enabling businesses like mail-order companies, airlines, travel agencies and management consulting firms to gain a foothold in foreign markets without having to open a branch.
AT&T publishes nationwide directories of 800 numbers for consumers (60,000 listings) and businesses (120,000 listings). People without directories can call 1-800-555-1212 for free directory assistance on toll-free numbers.
