AT&T/ZENITH HDTV DEMONSTRATION AT REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

AT&T/ZENITH HDTV DEMONSTRATION AT REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION
HOUSTON, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Delegates and guests at the Republican National Convention (August 17-20) in the Astrodome will get a rare preview of the future of visual communications entertainment.
Convention events will be displayed via a new technology known as digital high-definition television, or HDTV. It produces theater- quality images and CD-quality sound.
The HDTV system was jointly developed by AT&T (NYSE: T) and Zenith Electronics Corporation (NYSE: ZE), and is one of five competing for selection as the U.S. standard.
At the convention, President Bush's acceptance speech and other major activities will be captured by a unique HDTV camera. The pictures will be displayed live on prototype wide-screen HDTV monitors in a viewing area that will be part of the "American Spirit Expo" in the AstroArena.
The Federal Communications Commission is now evaluating the competing HDTV systems and is epected to select the U.S. transmission standard early in 1993. HDTV is expected to be commercially available by 1995.
Zenith and AT&T have been developing an all-digital HDTV system since 1990, and recently conducted an over-the-air field test of 75 miles -- some 25 miles beyond the primary broadcast area for conventional analog TV signals.
In addition to the HDTV demonstration, AT&T is the official long- distance communications provider for the Republican convention.
