AT&T's complicity with the NSA is deeply disturbing.
Telecom giant AT&T is at the centre of a new furore in the United States after revelations that it has been working with the National Security Agency (NSA) by helping Washington spy on internet traffic passing over its network.
That the company helped the NSA spy shouldn't come as a complete shock in light of the legislative onslaught on the wake of the terror attacks of 9/11. That it did so beforehand is troubling. And even more troubling are findings that it handed over the entire internet traffic that emanated to and from the United Nations complex in New York.
Through its complicity, AT&T allowed the NSA to have surveillance powers over most traffic in the US as well as that over foreign-to-foreign traffic, given that large amounts of the world's internet communications travel across American cables.
Clearly, this sad saga shows that there is no limit to which Washington spymasters will sink to gain an intelligence edge on both enemies and foes, domestic and international. The complicity of AT&T is depressing and deeply disturbing. It is a gross violation of public trust.
