ASTRONAUT SCOTT CARPENTER, SENATOR GAYLORD NELSON HIGHLIGHT LAUNCH OF HOMELITE'S OPERATION ENVIRONMENT

LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, and Scott Carpenter, the only American ever to man an orbital flight as a U.S. Astronaut and also serve as an undersea Aquanaut, appeared here today as guests of the Homelite Division of Textron, Inc. (NYSE: TXT) at the launch of the company's environmental initiative, Operation Environment.
As keynote speakers, the two distinguished environmentalists underscored Homelite's commitment to protect the environment through more technologically advanced, portable power equipment for consumers.
Homelite, a Division of Textron, Inc., is an international leader in the manufacture of chain saws, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, pumps, generators and other portable construction equipment. Textron Inc. is a multi-industry company with balanced operations in three business categories: aerospace/technology, commercial products, and financial services.
In his address, Carpenter noted that it will be necessary indefinitely for every man, woman, business and industry to be conscientiously involved in the environmental solutions that confront our society today.
"The earth is terra firma close up," Carpenter said, "but when viewed from space, it is delicate, isolated and fragile and in need of intensive care."
Senator Nelson encouraged the continued efforts by American corporations to become environmentally aware in all facets of business operations. "We need to develop a generation imbued with an ecological ethic," Nelson said.
Following addresses by Carpenter and Senator Nelson, Homelite's senior management announced its new 2-cycle, hand-held engines are designed to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission standards for 1995.
"Homelite recognizes that protecting the environment is one of the dominant issues of the 1990s," said Robert Reid, president of Homelite.
"Concern for `doing the right thing' is no longer someone else's problem; it is everyone's problem," Reid continued. "As individuals and as a corporation, Homelite and its employees are sounding an environmental wake-up call to its employees, customers, and vendors about the environmental challenge before us."
