ASTM prepares synthetic fiber for pipe, slab smoothness standards.
ASTM International's forthcoming C1818, Specification for Rigid Synthetic Fiber Reinforced Concrete Culvert, Storm Drain and Sewer Pipe, describes a companion approach to conventional reinforcement in at- or below-grade structures. Developed by ASTM C13 Committee on Concrete Pipe, it recognizes time-dependent properties that require testing of synthetic fiber beyond what would be typical for steel reinforced concrete drainage products.
"The standard ensures the engineer that the producer of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete pipe has performed due diligence in manufacturing and testing to ensure a strong and long-term product," affirms C13 member Ali Abolmaali of the University of Texas. Engineers who work in the drainage industry, along with structure or system producers are the most likely C1818 users, he adds. ASTM International's proposed WK49335, Test Method for Concrete Micro Surface Texture, describes the use of a contact stylus instrument, or profilometer, and reliable data indexes to measure and quantify a slab or structure's smoothness/roughness value. ASTM Subcommittee E06.21 on Serviceability members envision fast and precise surface inspection on a wide range of cement-based building materials, especially concrete flooring and decorative surfaces.
The technology WK49335 references will be used to provide an accurate assessment in concrete surface irregularities and serviceability. The proposed standard will be among agenda items on the next E06.21 meeting, scheduled as part of ASTM E06 on Performance of Buildings Committee Week, April 10-13 in San Antonio.
