ASTER APPOINTED ADVANSTAR'S PRESIDENT AND CEO

CLEVELAND, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Edward D. Aster, president of Advanstar Communications Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Advanstar Holdings Trust, today was appointed chief executive officer of the company.
Aster, 45, succeeds Richard B. Swank as chief executive of Advanstar, a leading U.S. business information and communication company. Swank will remain chairman of Advanstar Communications until year end and will continue as a director of the Trust following his retirement from management of the company.
In his new post, Aster will have overall responsibility for Advanstar's three operating areas. They include: Advanstar Publishing, a division which produces 55 business and professional magazines and journals for a wide variety of industries in North America and overseas; Advanstar Expositions, a division which owns and manages 60 expositions in more than a dozen industries for business, professional and consumer audiences in North America and abroad; and Advanstar Marketing Services, a business unit which markets information products and services associated with the company's portfolio, such as mailing lists, books, industry directories, magazine reprints, research and data searches.
Advanstar has annual revenues of approximately $150 million and has 1,000 employees who work out of 12 offices in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. It is headquartered in Cleveland.
Aster joined Advanstar as president in January of 1993, following Advanstar's acquisition of Aster Publishing Corp., a publishing, conference and marketing services company he founded in 1977. He has spent most of his career in publishing, holding various marketing and management positions with companies including Technology Publishing Inc. and Gordon Publications. After assisting Gordon with several new ventures, he launched his firm in Los Angeles. He moved the business to Eugene, Ore., in 1982, a location from which Advanstar continues to operate.
