ASTARTE FIBER NETWORKS ANNOUNCES NEW PHOTONIC CROSS-CONNECT SYSTEM FOR SINGLE MODE FIBER

 BOULDER, Colo., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Astarte Fiber Networks announces the release of the Star-Switch(TM) PCS-1600 photonic cross- connect system -- a completely optical matrix switch for single mode fiber networks. The PCS-1600 interconnects both point-to-point and ring network topologies. It provides complete photonic connectivity, protocol transparency, multiple wavelength throughput, and unlimited bandwidth previously unavailable in single mode networks. The PCS-1600 photonic cross-connect system offers many of the same operational and cost savings benefits to single mode fiber optic networks that digital cross-connect and matrix switching systems provide to high-speed copper networks.
 Common applications include disaster recovery, route diversity, optical test access and fiber optic cable management. Because all transmissions remain optical, the system can transport ATM, SONET, ISDN, and other high-speed network protocols. The PCS-1600 can be used to switch voice, data, and video transmissions by telephone and long distance companies, cable TV companies, utilities, metropolitan networking companies, and other high-speed fiber optic network users.

 The PCS-1600 is based upon Astarte's unique and proven photonic switching technology. Systems are currently being shipped to major telecommunications carriers both domestically and internationally. The technology features microprocessor-based positioning and servo-control alignment to provide fast switching speeds, low insertion loss, non- volatile memory, and extremely high reliability. The PCS-1600 can be controlled either locally or remotely through an RS-232 or RS-422 interface to provide provisioning and monitoring by network control centers. The PCS-1600 meets or exceeds all Bellcore specifications for optical cross-connect systems/switching systems and telephone company network engineering building standards.
