ASPIRING DOCTORS AWAIT THE PERFECT MATCH

The third week of March brings anticipation and excitement for thousands of senior medical students across the country. They are waiting to hear their names called during "Match Day," the annual event announcing where soon-to-be doctors will be assigned to serve their medical and surgical residencies.
At the Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP), the festivities will begin at noon Wednesday, March 18, in the Beitler Lounge, Ann Preston Hall (on the right side of main hospital building at 3300 Henry Ave., East Falls, Philadelphia). MCP invites the media to film the faces and feelings of more than 100 medical students as they prepare for graduation and the next phase of their medical education. Members of this class include a former teacher, linguist, two classical musicians, a construction site manager and several health care professionals. In addition, many of them are busy spouses and parents with unique stories to tell about their four years of medical school.
The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), as sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association, has coordinated the event for the past 39 years. The selection process begins in the third year of medical school, when students submit the names of up to 15 programs, in order of preference, and then wait to hear if the NRMP has "matched" them with one of their top choices. Last year, almost half of MCP students were matched with one of their top three choices.
MCP is a member of Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation (AHERF), an academic-based, integrated health care delivery system in Pennsylvania. The fourth largest system in the Delaware Valley, its members also include Medical College Hospitals, Main Clinical Campus; St. Christopher's Hospital for Children; Medical College Hospitals, Elkins Park Campus; and Medical College Hospitals, Bucks County Campus.
