ASM INTERNATIONAL N.V. COMPLETES SALE OF SUBSIDIARY TO GERMAN FIRM

 BILTHOVEN, The Netherlands, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ASM International N.V. (NASDAQ: ASMIF) today announced completion of the sale of ASM Fico Tooling B.V. (Fico) to Berliner Elektro Holding AG.
 ASM International N.V. sold 100 percent to the outstanding stock of this wholly owned subsidiary for NLG 60 million cash. In this stock transaction, Berliner Elektro assumes all Fico's liabilities including bank indebtedness of approximately NLG 30 million. As previously reported, ASM is also entitled to receive certain commissions after closing on revenues from designated Fico projects. A significant portion of the proceeds is being used to retire part of the existing bank debt of parent company.
 Commenting on the sale, Arthur H. del Prado, president and chief executive officer of ASM International, said, "The completion of this sale is an important step in, and affirmation of, our commitment to strengthen the company's financial position. It is also a reflection of the underlying values of ASM's product divisions."
 Berliner Elektro Holding AG, headquartered in Berlin, is engaged in electrical technology, electronics, and information and communications technology and traffic systems. Its shares trade on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
 The Netherlands-based Fico and its subsidiaries manufacture automated molding and trim and form systems for the semiconductor equipment industry. Fico's 1992 sales were NLG 100.6 million. "In the future," Mr. del Prado concluded, "ASM's back-end semiconductor equipment bun?ess including the production of bonders, leadframes and molding and trim and form systems will be concentrated in ASM Pacific Technology Ltd. headquartered in Hong Kong with manufacturing operations also in Singapore and Shenzhen, China."
 ASM International N.V., headquartered in Bilthoven, designs, manufactures and markets equipment and materials used to produce semiconductor devices. The company provides production solutions for the wafer processing, assembly and encapsulation areas through its facilities in Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia.
 At Sept. 30, 1993, 1.8329 Netherlands guilders equaled US$1.
