The conversation and the evening were great. She complimented me on my good manners, voice and dress sense.
We went out again and had another pleasant evening two nights later. The lady seemed keen to go to a forthcoming event with me so, two days later, I rang her. She told me she didn't want to see me and wanted some 'breathing space'. Why do women do this to men?

Perhaps she backed off because unhappy past experiences have made her wary.
Some people find it difficult to suppress strong feelings for former partners or lovers, whether a separation was sparked by widowhood, desertion or mistreatment.
Perhaps she was simply a little overwhelmed by your eagerness to see her so frequently so soon after your first meeting. She may even lack romantic experience. Maybe she just wants friendship and company.
She asked for breathing space so give her some.
Back off for a couple of weeks, then try inviting her out again and judge from her response.
