ASICS TIGER CORPORATION'S FOOTWEAR AND APPAREL DIVISIONS ACCELERATE TO THE NEXT LEVEL

ASICS TIGER CORPORATION'S FOOTWEAR AND APPAREL DIVISIONS
 ACCELERATE TO THE NEXT LEVEL
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Tackling the so- called "stagnant" sporting goods industry with an overall 48 percent increase in 1991, ASICS TIGER Corp. is actively reaping valuable market share in numerous categories from its competitors. In connection with this substantial growth, ASICS footwear and apparel divisions are expanding with significantly increased sales bookings and division expansion.
To foster this corporate growth, ASICS will set its 1992 focus on improving the combined efforts of its footwear and apparel divisions to achieve more overall continuity. This, in turn, will enable ASICS to achieve its long-term goals of growth and profitability, while creating a more cohesive product package that will further develop in-line merchandising.
Dennis DiDominicis, promoted to Sr. director, footwear division last year, will continue to take the lead in the development of ASICS footwear division. In an effort to create unison between footwear and apparel, ASICS has hired David Chandler as Sr. director, apparel division. Like DiDominicis, Chandler will be responsible for coordinating and managing all aspects of the division, while assuming total profit and loss responsibilities.
"It is essential that a strong tie between footwear and apparel be nurtured and emphasized for the continued growth of ASICS," says DiDominicis.
"The company believes that the joining of forces will enable ASICS to continue to set the technological pace in both the athletic footwear and apparel arenas, while helping the company reach the next level of success."
Expanding on ASICS high-performance image, DiDominicis and Chandler will work closely together to augment additional vehicles for corporate growth by stressing a team strategy for footwear and apparel and broad- based grass roots programs.
Because ASICS footwear is synonymous with technological advancement and exceptional quality, Chandler will concentrate on developing a strong line of apparel to complement ASICS seasonal footwear offerings.
"One of the main factors that drew me to ASICS was its developmental success of the ASICS Performance Package, a coordinated group of technical running footwear, apparel and accessories," says Chandler.
"This strong, progressive group has become a trademark associated with the company and has reinforced the fact that ASICS is dedicated to the athlete's performance needs. ASICS is also very prominent in the men's and women's Gore-Tex outerwear groups and, more recently, is making a name for itself with dynamic signature-print running collections. These offerings provide a solid base for building future apparel lines and serve as excellent cross-merchandising pieces."
One common denominator that both Sr. directors will work toward is increasing ASICS brand awareness and market share through basic strategic marketing, targeted promotions and more accurate sales forecasting.
"By intensifying ASICS market interaction and grass roots research of both footwear and apparel, ASICS will be able to better foresee product trends and more quickly respond to consumer demands," says DiDominicis, who helped drive ASICS men's running footwear up 47 percent, women's running footwear up 85 percent and ASICS cross training footwear to the No. 3 position in the category within the past year.
While DiDominicis has made major contributions to ASICS footwear sales during the past three years, Chandler also sports an excellent track record in the sporting goods industry. Prior to ASICS, Chandler served as sales and marketing director at Hind Inc., where he boosted sales to more than $40 million by developing the company's performance sector.
