ASICS EXECUTIVE APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF THE ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR ASSOCIATION

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading one of the five largest athletic footwear companies in the industry, H. Peter Goehrig, vice president and general manager of ASICS TIGER Corp., has been appointed president of the Athletic Footwear Association.
Goehrig's main responsibilities as president of the AFA will be to oversee grant recommendations, issue selection, and setting the tone and direction of the organization. During Goehrig's one-year term, he will also sit on the board of directors of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.
"I am anxiously looking forward to developing a strong, working relationship with colleagues within the sporting goods industry and in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle to communities through sports participation," says Goehrig.
The AFA, which was founded in 1982, serves a 99-member group of international manufacturers and marketers distributing athletic footwear within the United States.
In addition, the AFA works to encourage the growth of sports participation at the recreational and amateur levels, accomplished largely through a series of grants and sponsorships. Through mid-1993, more than $1.8 million has been donated to such endeavors. The AFA is part of the SGMA, a federation of 14 non-profit associations and committees.
Goehrig's management skills have played a significant role in helping ASICS meet its first three-year corporate goal of $245 million in sales by year-end 1992, resulting in a first-time profit. Goehrig has seen the company's yearly sales triple since 1989, when the company reported sales of $85 million.
"One of my top priorities as president of the AFA will be to assist the sporting goods industry to move forward during these sluggish economic times," says Goehrig.
"Despite the economy, the AFA will continue to devise new and innovative strategies to further promote the industry without sacrificing the expected high level of quality and service."
Goehrig, who began his career at General Foods Inc. in consumer package goods, has more than 20 years of experience in the marketing and management field. Prior to ASICS, Goehrig held various general management positions during his 14 years of employment at AMF Inc., including executive vice president for the Consumer Products division of CUNO; general manager of several industrial products divisions; and vice president of Marketing and Sales for both Tyrolia Ski Bindings and the Sports Products Group. During his tenure with AMF, Goehrig also served as staff vice president of planning.
Goehrig's strong leadership abilities and expertise within the consumer products industry has made him a genuine asset to ASICS. Goehrig hopes to accomplish the same level of success with the AFA, as he has with ASICS.
