ASICS AUGMENTS INTERNATIONAL TENNIS LAUNCH WITH PLAYER ENDORSEMENTS
NEW YORK, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- To complement its 1993 international tennis footwear and apparel launch, sporting goods conglomerate ASICS Corporation has signed top athletes Alex O'Brien, Brian Dunn and Byron Black to the ASICS tennis team.
Looking to correlate ASICS' technical product image with talented, premier players within the tennis arena, ASICS intends to build an elite team of athletes to showcase its performance-oriented footwear and apparel lines.
"ASICS is committed to bringing its long-standing heritage of technical products to the international tennis market," said Toshio Kondo, ASICS Corporation's general manager of corporate communications.
"O'Brien, Dunn and Black are high-caliber, up and coming tennis athletes recognized for their competitive skill and precision and ASICS anticipates an eventful future together."
Recently giving Jim Courier a run for his money at the 1992 U.S. Open, O'Brien in 1992 was the first player since 1974 to win both NCAA singles and doubles titles. Named the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Senior of the Year, 1992, O'Brien also holds the honor of the NCAA win-loss record (40-5) since team competition was introduced in 1977.
Dunn, who turned pro at this year's U.S. Open, is a product of the U.S. Tennis Association's five-year-old Player Development Program. Dunn is ranked No. 1 in the world in the ITF Junior Rankings, won the 1992 U.S. Junior Championships. was runner-up in the 1992 Wimbledon Junior Tournament and was runner-up in the 1992 Australian Open Junior Tournament. Wearing a size 15 shoe and measuring in at six feet and seven inches, Dunn is an uncommonly tall tennis player with an enormous amount of potential on the professional circuit.
A native of Zimbabwe, Black had an outstanding four-year career at the University of Southern California where he earned all-American honors three times in singles and four times in doubles. The recipient of a gold medal in the 1988 Africa Games in both singles and doubles, Black captured the 1989 NCAA doubles title with teammate Eric Amend and was also awarded the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award in 1990.
ASICS believes that the sponsorship of these young talents directly reflects the corporation's worldwide philosophy: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano -- meaning a sound mind in a sound body. The development of the international ASICS tennis team is a key factor in the foundation for ASICS' future product launch within the U.S. tennis market, and will further expand ASICS' worldwide tennis commitment.
