 FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- To further establish its position as a performance basketball footwear manufacturer, ASICS TIGER Corp. will be the official sponsor of the 28th annual Roundball Classic, one of the most prestigious pre-college basketball tournaments in the nation. The sponsorship is just one of the ways ASICS(R) will be promoting its basketball line in 1992. ASICS will heavily support this category with a re-vamped fall 1992 basketball footwear launch, promoted with extensive advertising, strong promotions, marketing and athlete endorsee programs.
 The "granddaddy" of high school all-star games, the ASICS Roundball Classic will be held on Friday, April 10 at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. The ASICS Roundball Classic's main tournament will highlight the nation's top high school senior basketball players competing in the U.S. East vs. U.S. West tournament. The event will also feature a regional tournament between Western Pennsylvania's top players.
 The ASICS Roundball Classic will feature three of the nation's top four high school senior basketball players including No. 1, Corliss Williamson of Arkansas; No. 2, Othella Harrington of Mississippi; and No. 4, Rodrick Rhodes of New Jersey. Joining the trio will be Chris Davis of Virginia and John Wallace of Ohio, both of whom are ranked among the nation's top 10 prep prospects.
 Players in the ASICS Roundball Classic are chosen by sports writers and basketball coaches from across the nation. The tournament is an excellent opportunity for high school seniors to demonstrate their talents to potential college recruiters. This top-ranked tournament was founded by John "Sonny" Vaccaro, a powerhouse in high school and college basketball arenas.
 "ASICS believes that the Roundball Classic is a strong, grass roots tournament that will give ASICS outstanding exposure as a premier manufacturer of basketball footwear," says Roy Smith, ASICS basketball promotions representative.
 As the official athletic footwear and apparel sponsor, ASICS will supply all tournament players, coaches and ESPN announcers with basketball footwear, T-shirts, shorts, socks and duffel bags. ASICS will also donate monetary support toward the tournament.
 "Because the company is intensely pursuing basketball as a core footwear category, ASICS believes that the Roundball Classic will be the perfect opportunity for ASICS to showcase its basketball footwear line to both enthusiast and consumer audiences."
 For the first time, ASICS will offer its basketball footwear line in two seasons. The team-oriented line will be available in fall 1992, while a second retail line will be offered in spring of 1993.
 Patterned with a completely new, lightweight midsole and outsole, ASICS' re-vamped basketball footwear line will include an updated medial and lateral wrap for stability and a re-designed toe box for a broader, contemporary appeal.
