ASIAN AMERICAN JOURNALISTS GATHER IN WASHINGTON; JOURNALISTS TO EXPLORE 'FACING THE FUTURE' The national convention of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) kicks off today week with more 600 Asian American journalists convening in Washington to examine, evaluate and encourage fair, accurate and sensitive news coverage of Asian American community issues. WHO: The four-day convention features numerous prominent speakers, including: -- Washington Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly -- George Takei, actor and political activist -- Angela E. Oh, 1992 president-elect of the Korean American Bar Association -- Gloria Steinem, author and activist -- Peter Pritchard, editor, USA TODAY -- Helen Zia, executive editor, Ms. magazine WHEN: Aug. 26-29 WHERE: The Mayflower Hotel, 1127 Connecticut Ave. N.W., Washington WHAT: The convention features four days of workshops, panels and other meetings, including: -- Dealing With Prejudice -- After the L.A. Riots -- The Race for Equality -- Asians and AIDS -- Asian Americans: Voices and Perceptions -- From Ethnic to Mainstream -- Viewing the Story From Different Perspectives -- A Rape Victim's Privacy -- On the Campaign Trail NOTES: -- Media representatives are invited to cover the convention.
