ASHLAND OIL, INC. AWARDS HONOR 10 OUTSTANDING MINNESOTA TEACHERS
ST. PAUL, Minn., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from business, education and government paid tribute today to a group of professionals vital to the development of our youth - primary and secondary school teachers.
In a special ceremony in Gov. Arne Carlson's office, 10 outstanding Minnesota teachers received Ashland Oil Teacher Achievement Awards for excellence in their profession.
Each winning teacher was presented a $2,500 cash award and was recognized by Carlson; John Roman, superintendent of Ashland Petroleum Company's St. Paul Park refinery; and representatives from the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation, the Minnesota Education Association and the Minnesota Federation of Teachers.
The 10 outstanding teachers are: Joyce Anne Bell, Edgerton Elementary School, Maplewood; Ann Harriet Griffin, Riverview Communications Magnet, St. Paul; Dennis Raymond Kalow, Cannon Falls High School, Cannon Falls; George Edward Larson, Brooklyn Center Junior-Senior High, Brooklyn Center; Susan Jeanine Ree Liden, Willmar Senior High School, Willmar; William D. Mittlefehldt, Anoka Senior High School, Anoka; Vicki Lynn Olsen, Bemidji High School, Bemidji; Carl Marnold Ostby, BOLD High School, Olivia; Joseph Alois Reymann, Saint Thomas Academy, Mendota Heights; and Roger Herbert Tenney, Owatonna High School, Owatonna.
"The link between quality education and the future of today's students is evident," said Roman in congratulating the recipients. "We cannot expect youth to excel tomorrow if we don't train them and provide them with quality resources today. Innovative, committed teachers are vital in shaping these resources, and their outstanding efforts and initiative must not go unrecognized.
"In its fourth year in Minnesota, the Ashland Oil Teacher Awards program continues to grow in popularity as the public takes an opportunity to show appreciation to teachers. In making their selections, judges confirmed that innovative, progressive teachers are not the exception in the classroom, and must become the norm for children to achieve success in a global marketplace," Roman continued.
Nominations were open to the general public through Feb. 14, 1992. Any licensed Minnesota teacher currently teaching kindergarten through grade 12 was eligible. Ten winners in each of four states in which Ashland Oil sponsors the program -- Minnesota, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia -- were selected by a panel of educators. Criteria for judging included philosophy of teaching, classroom teaching innovations and community service. More than 6,400 nominations were received from the four states.
The Teacher Achievement Awards program is one of several Ashland Oil initiatives which focus on the importance of quality education and cooperative business-education partnerships.
