 ASC INC. RELEASES CONVERTIBLE CAR SALES FIGURES FOR U.S. AND EUROPE
 SOUTHGATE, Mich., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- ASC Incorporated, the world leader in automobile convertible technology and production, today announced 1991 convertible car sales figures for the U.S. and Europe. Figures are derived from ASC's extensive specialty vehicle database and will be released annually.
 Total U.S. convertible car sales increased 11.5 percent from calendar year 1990 to 1991, despite a decline of 12 percent in the general U.S. passenger car market. More than 2.5 percent of U.S. passenger cars are convertibles.
 The Mazda Miata convertible was the overall leader in the U.S. with sales of more than 30,000 units. Chrysler LeBaron, which had been the top seller since 1988, was second. Rounding out the top-10 selling convertible cars in the U.S. were: 3) Ford Mustang; 4) Mercury Capri; 5) Dodge Shadow; 6) Pontiac Sunbird; 7) Geo Metro; 8) Chevrolet Cavalier; 9) VW Cabriolet; and 10) Toyota Celica.
 In Europe, the convertible car market has doubled since 1987, with the market growing an average of 22 percent in the past five years. Germany was the largest convertible car market in Europe in 1991 with almost 66,000 units sold, or 53 percent of total European sales. Great Britain was second with 11 percent. France and Italy each accounted for 10 percent of total convertible car sales.
 VW Golf was the top-selling convertible in Europe in 1991 as it has been for four of the past five years with more than 29,000 units sold and 23 percent of the market. Ford Escort was the second best-selling convertible; BMW 3 series third; and Mazda Miata fourth.
