ASAPS STATEMENT ON RELEASE OF STUDIES & INTERNAL DOCUMENTS RELATED
TO SILICONE-GEL BREAST IMPLANTS BY DOW CORNING
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Edward S. Truppman, M.D., president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), today issued the following statement regarding Dow Corning's release of scientific studies and internal documents related to silicone-gel breast implants:
"Plastic surgeons support the full investigation of all information related to the safety of silicone-gel breast implants released today by Dow Corning. This information, which is contained in over 800 pages of studies and documents, must be reviewed carefully by qualified scientists to determine its meaning and importance to the safety issues in question.
"There is a real danger that statements from these documents will be taken out of context by the media and their meaning or scientific implications misinterpreted. The scientific issues involved are extremely complex. That is why the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has joined other groups in calling for the establishment of a qualified panel with blue-ribbon credentials and integrity to conduct a scientific and unbiased investigation into this and any other new information which may be related to breast-implant safety. Such a panel should be convened under the auspices of the National Institute of Health or a similar, scientifically credible organization.
"FDA Commissioner David Kessler has refused to convene such a panel and, instead, has stated his intention to bring this material before the current FDA advisory panel. Although ASAPS is cooperating with the FDA in every way possible, we share the view of many responsible medical professionals that the current panel clearly lacks the necessary expertise to conduct a meaningful review of this type of complex scientific data. Furthermore, some panel members have publicly proclaimed their bias against breast implants, and we therefore have reason to doubt that a fair review of any additional data can be achieved.
"We urge the FDA to reconsider its position and to cooperate with the establishment of a credible blue-ribbon panel of experts to review all new information on breast implants. The agency has an obligation to see that this information is reviewed in a scientifically responsible manner."
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is a not-for-profit, professional organization of approximately 900 board- certified plastic surgeons who concentrate their practices in aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery.
