ARTHUR C. BASS, FORMER FEDERAL EXPRESS PRESIDENT, DIES

 MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Arthur C. Bass, president of Federal Express Corp. during its formative years, died of cancer at his home in Memphis, Aug. 22. He was 61-years-old.
 Bass joined Federal Express in 1972 and was part of the creative team that helped founder Frederick W. Smith launch the company that invented door-to-door overnight package delivery.
 Bass, known for his marketing brilliance, entrepreneurship, and dedication, became president in 1975.
 Bass was chief operating officer of the company, from 1975 until 1980, and when he left the company in 1982 he was vice chairman. He joined Midway Airlines and left in 1985. He returned to Memphis to head StarMark Energy Systems Inc., until 1989. In 1990 he took the top job at Emery Air Freight but left after a brief tenure. Bass also served as president of the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Cooper companies of New York.
 Bass is survived by his wife Paula; sons, Cole, Kaolin and Brandon all of Memphis; and Robert, of Charlotte, N.C. He also leaves a foster daughter, Brandi Clarkson of Memphis.
 Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
