ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH McNEIL CONSUMER PRODUCTS COMPANY

ATLANTA, Nov. 18 ~PRNewswire~ -- The Arthritis Foundation and McNeil Consumer Products Company, maker of Tylenol (R) pain reliever, announced today that they had reached a major, long-term agreement to jointly develop consumer education programs for people with arthritis. Under terms of the agreement, McNeil will work with the Foundation to increase the level of awareness and membership of the Arthritis Foundation through joint advertising, promotional events and medical community campaigns. The comprehensive program also will provide in excess of $1 million annually to support arthritis research that ultimately could help improve the lives of the 37 million Americans who are affected by the disease.
An initial $500,000 grant was presented by James T. Lenehan, McNeil president, to James R. Klinenberg, M.D., chairman of the Arthritis Foundation, and Carol Lawrence, a celebrity volunteer, at the organization's national meeting in Anaheim, Calif.
"We have admired the Arthritis Foundation's research and medical education programs and its efforts to support people with arthritis," said Lenehan. "Our interest in the Foundation's work," he continued, "was heightened by the publication of a study last year in the New England Journal of Medicine which indicated that Tylenol acetaminophen plays a helpful role in managing the occasional pain of osteoarthritis. It is our hope that this alliance will benefit the Foundation by increasing public awareness of arthritis and by providing funding for the Foundation's many worthwhile projects."
Dr. Klinenberg explained that the Foundation views the agreement as a partnership opportunity. "We look forward to working with McNeil in the development of programs for those who have arthritis," he said.
Among the programs McNeil and the Foundation have planned are a national television and print advertising campaign, continuing education efforts targeting doctors and consumer promotions designed to generate funds and membership for the Foundation.
The national television advertising campaign, which will debut later this year, is designed to provide the public with direct access to the Foundation and osteoarthritis health information. The ad will feature a toll-free telephone number that will provide callers with a booklet on coping with osteoarthritis, information about Foundation services and coupons for Tylenol products. Additionally, a special Tylenol print advertising campaign will include the toll-free number.
McNeil also will feature the Foundation in a national consumer promotion next year. For the redemption coupons for Extra Strength Tylenol, McNeil will contribute up to $500,000 to the Foundation.
The Arthritis Foundation, headquartered in Atlanta, supports research to find ways to cure and prevent arthritis and seeks to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.
McNeil is located in Fort Washington, Pa. It is a member of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. Its flagship product is Tylenol, a non-aspirin pain reliever.
