Reception tonight for calligraphy artist

"Brush Mind," an exhibition of calligraphy by internationally known artist Kazuaki Tanahashi, opens with a reception and artist's talk at 5 p.m. today at White Lotus Gallery, 767 Willamette St.

Presented in scroll format, the calligraphy showcases Tanahashi's explorations of the use of acrylic paint on canvas.

In addition to pursing his own artwork, Tanahashi conducts calligraphy workshops at various Buddhist centers around the country and internationally.

He is a scholar and has translated and illustrated many works about Zen Buddhism.

Most recently, he has completed a translation of the masterwork of Dogen Zenji, founder of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan, titled "Shobogenzo, the Treasury of the True Dharma Eye."

He is a longtime worker for peace and a founder of the organization A World Without Armies.
