Family gives a van Gogh to Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum has been given an original canvas by Vincent van Gogh, "The Ox-Cart," by Fred and Frances Sohn of Roseburg.

The Sohns have been Oregon residents since 1949 when they moved to Roseburg, where Fred built a successful lumber business. The Sohn's five sons and their families, including nine grandchildren, have grown up around the painting.

"Four generations of our family have had much pleasure from this painting," said Frances Sohn, whose father bought the painting in 1950. "It is now time for a wider audience to enjoy and learn from this special painting."

The Van Gogh is the most valuable gift to the museum since Portland residents Roger and Laura Meier gave a landmark suite of Toulouse-Lautrec prints in 2003. The van Gogh was painted early in van Gogh's career, in 1884.
