Prison term looms in fatal collision

LANCASTER -- A Lancaster woman faces up to 10 years in prison for driving drunk and causing a head-on crash that killed a 22-year-old woman.

Elaine Rogers, 51, pleaded no contest Monday to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the November 2006 collision on Avenue M near 10th Street East that killed Chantel Pee of Lancaster.

Prosecutors said Rogers' blood alcohol level was .24, three times the legal limit. She was injured in the crash and now uses a wheelchair. Sentencing was set for Aug. 20.

Woman, 57, sentenced in animal-cruelty case

LANCASTER -- The manager of a horse-rescue site in Pearblossom pleaded no contest Monday to two felony counts of animal cruelty involving a horse and dog that had to be euthanized after being taken off the property.

Superior Court Judge Richard Naranjo immediately sentenced Janis Ridgeway Damiani, 57, to two years and eight months in state prison, said John Nantroup, head deputy of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office's Antelope Valley branch.

Twenty-eight other animal-cruelty charges that were filed against her earlier this month were dismissed as a result of the plea, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Those charges involved 14 other horses and 14 cats that were starving or severely injured and had to be euthanized, authorities said.

Three independent veterinarians made the decision to euthanize the animals, Deputy District Attorney S. Kelly Cromer said earlier this month. An estimated 100 horses were removed from the Equus Sanctuary and taken to other facilities, Cromer said.
