ANTELOPE VALLEY

Traffic will detour around drain project

PALMDALE -- Traffic detours will be in effect beginning Monday through the end of August for construction on a storm-drain project along 35th Street East between Palmdale Boulevard and Avenue R.

At different stages of construction, the eastbound traffic will be detoured off Palmdale Boulevard at 30th Street East, and westbound traffic will be detoured off at 40th Street East.

Local traffic will be allowed within the detoured area but will not be permitted to access 35th Street East from Palmdale Boulevard.

SANTA CLARITA

Spring book sale set to benefit libraries

VALENCIA -- The Friends of the Libraries of Santa Clarita Valley will hold a spring book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14 at the Valencia Library, 23743 W. Valencia Blvd.

A members-only pre-sale will be held from 5-7 p.m. June 13. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Libraries of Santa Clarita. Donations of used books will be accepted at the Valencia Library. No magazines or encyclopedias will be accepted. For more information, call 661-252-3980.

Nearly 300 trees headed for roadside

SANTA CLARITA -- A city contractor will be planting nearly 300 trees this summer and removing 62 palm trees along Camp Plenty Road that were damaged in the Buckweed Fire in October.

On Tuesday, City Council members approved spending up to $187,440 for West Coast Arborists Inc., of Anaheim, to do the work.

Applicants sought for city panels

SANTA CLARITA -- The city is looking for applicants to serve on its planning commission, parks, recreation and community services commission and open space preservation district financial accountability and audit panel.

Residents can get an application from from the City Clerk's Office, 23920 Valencia Blvd., or from the city's Web site, www.santa-clarita.com. Applications and three letters of recommendation are due by 5 p.m. June 20.

Council members will review the applications and submit their nominations at the July 8 council meeting.
