ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS: TEST PITS RESCHEDULED AT GSA SITE

WALTHAM, Mass., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Army plans to have its contractors in the field at the GSA site this month to dig a series of test pits. If the weather and site conditions cooperate, the work will be done during the week of March 18, 1996. The Corps had earlier scheduled the work for completion last fall, but contract documents and funding were not in place before the winter snows arrived.

The test pits will be dug by a back hoe and will be completed within the week. The areas of interest were identified by electromagnetic surveys which indicated the presence of unidentifiable objects. These objects are expected to consist primarily of construction debris, but confirmatory digging will make the final determination.

The test pits and sampling are being performed by ABB Environmental Services of Wakefield, MA under contract with the Army Corps of Engineers in Waltham.

Information Advisories will be published periodically to keep all interested parties up-to-date on activities underway by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with the closure of the Army Materials Technology Laboratory in Watertown, Massachusetts, under the Base Realignment and Closure Act. In addition, details will be provided about activities on former Watertown Arsenal properties eligible for evaluation and cleanup under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program.
