STRATFORD, Conn., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army today

awarded Sikorsky Aircraft a five-year, $1.54 billion contract to produce 300 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, mission flexibility kits and to provide related program support. It is the largest single contract ever awarded to Sikorsky.
The contract, Sikorsky's fourth multi-year Black Hawk contract, calls for delivery of 60 aircraft per year in fiscal years 1992 through 1996 and brings the total number of Black Hawk helicopters delivered and on order for the U.S. Army to more than 1,400. The contract also provides an option to procure up to 180 additional Black Hawk helicopters.
Sikorsky President Gene Buckley announced the contract at a large gathering of employees at the company's Stratford facility. Buckley told the workers they had won the contract by their commitment to continuous improvement in designing, producing and supporting Sikorsky's helicopters. "This is a victory for Team Black Hawk," Buckley said.
He said, "We're especially pleased that the Army has again registered its confidence in Sikorsky and the Black Hawk helicopter. The Black Hawk has proven itself a reliable, multi-mission aircraft, and we intend to carry out research and development over the next five years to make it even more capable, reliable and versatile."
Sikorsky's UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter proved itself capable of performing a wide range of missions in harsh environmental conditions and combat during Operations Desert Shield/Storm. Approximately 450 Army Black Hawk aircraft were deployed to the Persian Gulf.
To date, the Army's Black Hawk fleet has logged more than 1.4 million flying hours.
The Black Hawk helicopter is a core product for Sikorsky, which began delivering the UH-60 to the Army in 1978. The U.S. Navy's SH-60B and SH-60F antisubmarine helicopters were derived from the UH-60 design, as were Coast Guard, Air Force and Special Operations aircraft. Both the Army and Navy configurations have been widely accepted worldwide. Eighteen international customers now operating or have ordered Black Hawk and Seahawk aircraft.
Sikorsky pioneered the helicopter industry and is the world's leading helicopter designer and manufacturer. Its models are widely deployed by all the U.S. military branches, and are flown by military and commercial users in more than 30 nations.
