ARMCO SELLS E.G. SMITH CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS DIVISION

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Armco Inc. (NYSE: AS), headquartered here, today announced that it had completed the sale of its E.G. Smith Construction Products Division, a design and fabricator of exterior curtain wall systems, to Smith Steelite, a Pittsburgh-based investor group. The purchase price was not disclosed. Armco said the sale was part of its strategy to concentrate on specialty steels and divest businesses that are not a strategic fit.
E.G. Smith, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has fabricating plants there and in Cambridge, Ohio. It employs about 135 in Cambridge; about 115 in Pittsburgh and an additional 100 persons in field and sales locations. The company's 1992 sales were approximately $47 million, primarily to the low-rise commercial and industrial buildings market. The company earned a pre-tax income in 1992, but the amount was not disclosed.
Not included in the sale was Flour City Architectural Metals, formerly part of E.G. Smith. It continues to operate as a unit of Armco.
Armco is a leading domestic producer of stainless and electrical steels. It also produces carbon steels and steel products, non- residential construction products and tubular goods. Armco has joint venture interests in companies which produce stainless steels, carbon flat-rolled steels and produce and distribute oil field machinery and equipment.
