ARMCO ELECTS GARY R. HILDRETH GENERAL COUNSEL; KENT NAMED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Armco Inc. (NYSE: AS) has elected Gary R. Hildreth as general counsel of the specialty steel producer. He succeeds Robert W. Kent, who was elected senior vice president and continues as secretary of the corporation.
Announcing the management change which became effective earlier this month, Armco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert L. Purdum said that Hildreth, 54, assumes full accountability for the company's legal affairs. He reports directly to Mr. Purdum.
"I am pleased to have a person with Mr. Hildreth's qualifications as our new general counsel," Purdum said. "His long experience working closely with our divisions makes him eminently qualified to manage Armco's legal function as we continue to focus the company's efforts on operations".
A native of Indiana, Hildreth holds a B.S. degree in business and a law degree (J.D.) from Indiana University. Prior to joining Armco, he was an attorney for Lockheed's Missiles & Space Company division.
In 1971, Hildreth joined Armco as general counsel for Hitco, an Armco subsidiary, and became general attorney for Armco's oil field equipment and supply division in 1978. He was named assistant general counsel for Armco in 1986 and associate general counsel two years later. In 1992, he was named assistant vice president - law.
Purdum said that Kent, in addition to his duties as secretary, "will handle foreign trade matters and continue his general oversight of Armco's government affairs activities, and will undertake numerous special projects."
Kent, 58, earned a B.A. degree in History and Political Affairs from Princeton University and a law degree (J.D.) from Harvard Law School. He joined Armco in 1967 after seven years as an attorney with the New York firm, Breed, Abbott & Morgan. He progressed through various positions in Armco's legal department and was elected corporate vice president - law, general counsel and secretary in 1981.
Armco, headquartered in Parsippany, is a leading domestic producer of stainless and electrical steels.
