ARMCO CONSOLIDATING BOWMAN METAL DECK DIVISION TO STRENGTHEN MARKETING AND OPERATIONS; SORVOLD NAMED GENERAL MANAGER

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Armco Inc. (NYSE: AS) announced that its Bowman Metal Deck Division is being consolidated into Armco's Empire-Detroit Steel Division to further improve operating performance and take advantage of stronger Midwestern markets for Bowman products.
As a result of the business consolidation, equipment from Bowman's Heidelberg, Pa. plant will be transferred to an existing Bowman plant in Gary, Ind., and to another Armco plant still to be determined. The Heidelberg plant is scheduled to close early in the second quarter of 1993.
Armco said that the Heidelberg plant employs 125; 70 are members of USWA Local 1049, the remainder are salaried. The company indicated that several salaried employees would be transferred to the Gary, Ind. plant as well as the other location.
Charles Kennedy, president of Mansfield, Ohio-headquartered Empire- Detroit Steel, welcomed the addition of the Bowman products noting that the synergies to be obtained would benefit both operations in the long term. He said that Steven Sorvold, formerly director of purchasing for Bowman, has been named general mana ?of the consolidated Bowman business, responsible for sales and operations.
Sorvold said that relocating Bowman's equipment would help take advantage of stronger Midwestern markets for Bowman products as the floor and roof deck market in the Eastern U.S. has been severely depressed in recent years. The move should improve operating performance as it will reduce overhead, use more steel from Empire- Detroit and gain operating and productivity efficiencies.
Sorvold added that customers of Bowman's Gary plant will benefit from a slightly expanded product line including steel roof and floor deck and other configurations. The other location will manufacture all cellular deck and highway products and serve an expanded customer base in the Midwest as well as maintain its current customer base in Eastern and Southern regions of the U.S. All products will continue to be marketed under the Bowman name.
Armco, headquartered in Parsippany, is a leading domestic producer of stainless and electrical steels. Armco also produces carbon steels and steel products, non-residential construction products and tubular goods. Armco has joint venture interests in companies which produce coated, high-strength and low-carbon flat-rolled steels and produce and distribute oilfield machinery and equipment. The Empire-Detroit Steel Division of Armco manufactures flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels.
