ARISTECH CHEMICAL CORPORATION TO ENGINEER STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Aristech Chemical Corporation announced today that it will begin engineering of a new, proprietary, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to produce isophorone.
To be located in Haverhill, Ohio, at the company's industrial chemicals production site, the initial 35 million pounds per year facility is scheduled to come on stream in 1996.
"Market demand for isophorone, and particularly its derivatives, is growing," Thomas Marshall, chairman and chief executive officer, said in making the announcement. "We expect the production from this world-scale facility to be of higher quality than is now available in the U.S. market, and to reduce substantially or eliminate the need for imported material." Currently, there is only one North American producer of isophorone, with imports from Europe filling nearly 25 percent of domestic demand.
Isophorone is a versatile chemical. Its use as a solvent has been stable, and its application as a feedstock for some derivatives, such as isophorone diamine (IPDA) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), is expanding rapidly. IPDA is used as a catalyst in the production of epoxy resins and is the feedstock for IPDI. IPDI is used to produce light stable polyurethanes which have many applications, including powder coatings. Applications for additional derivatives range from engineering plastics to pharmaceuticals. "Because of its versatility, we view isophorone as a bridge in Aristech's movement into the specialty chemicals market," Marshall said.
Aristech will enter into isophorone production with a strong raw material position. The company produces nearly 400 million pounds per year of the product's principal feedstock, acetone, at the Haverhill plant. In addition, Aristech will employ a vapor phase production process using a patented catalyst developed at the company's research laboratory. "These three important factors will enable us to produce a product that is competitive on a cost and quality basis with any plant in the world," Marshall added.
The isophorone unit will create several new employment opportunities at the Haverhill plant. Currently, 420 employees at the Haverhill plant are engaged in the production of phenol, acetone, alpha methylstyrene, cumene hydroperoxide, bisphenol A, aniline and diphenylamine.
Marshall expressed appreciation to the state of Ohio, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Vernal Riffe, and officials of Scioto County and Green Township for their assistance in assuring the siting of this project at Haverhill.
