ARCO VOLUNTEERS DIG IN TO SUPPORT BOLSA CHICA STATE WETLANDS RESERVE

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 50 ARCO employees rolled up their sleeves today (Friday, Sept. 10) to help the Bolsa Chica Conservancy with much-needed improvements at the 300-acre Bolsa Chica Wetlands Ecological Reserve.
The employees are all members of ARCO's Corporate Environmental Remediation group and their legal staff, headquartered in Los Angeles.
"A number of projects were considered by the Conservancy before deciding on the two we'll address today," said C. Richard Knowles, Environmental Remediation manager. The two projects involve repairing the Reserve's walk trail and removing non-native plants in various sections of the Reserve.
"These projects are important to the public's enjoyment of this irreplaceable natural resource," said Knowles.
One team of ARCO volunteers will fill highly eroded areas of the walk trail with decomposed granite. Another team will remove unwanted ice plant from the upland dune area near Pacific Coast Highway, allowing native sand dune plants to provide native habitat. The work is being done by hand to minimize damage to the terrain.
"Such projects are great for building morale and a sense of teamwork," said Knowles. "Our group spends most of its time on large- scale remediation projects that often take years to complete. Here, the pay-out and the gratification are immediate."
Commenting on the ARCO project, Conservancy Executive Director Phil Smith said: "It is through the efforts of volunteers such as ARCO's that the Reserve has been sustained over the years."
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is home to many species of plants, birds and animals, some of which are endangered. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is a non-profit organization whose purpose is research and education in wetlands science and wetlands restoration, particularly the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.
