ARCO SETS FLUID UNIT RECORD AT COMPANY'S LOS ANGELES REFINERY
CARSON, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- An operating unit at ARCO's Los Angeles Refinery here has passed the four-year mark in continuous run time, an all-time record in the company's history. ARCO's fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit, which last went down for repairs in May 1988, now is in its 51st month of continuously making product with no down time.
"As far as we know, this is a world record," said Abe W. Johnson, refinery manager for ARCO Products Co., the refining and marketing arm of ARCO (NYSE: ARC). "We attribute the long, smooth run to good operating and maintenance practices."
The FCC unit functions as a key component of the refining process. Heavy gas oil is fed into the FCC, where it is heated to temperatures greater than 900 degrees Fahrenheit to promote the "cracking" of large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller molecules. The smaller molecules then are further refined into commercial gasoline.
Previously, the ARCO FCC unit had required maintenance turnarounds about every three years. The next scheduled turnaround for the unit will occur this October.
