ARCO SELECTS FLUOR DANIEL INC. AS PRIME CONTRACTOR TO FABRICATE MODULES FOR ALASKA GAS HANDLING PROJECT

ARCO SELECTS FLUOR DANIEL INC. AS PRIME CONTRACTOR
TO FABRICATE MODULES FOR ALASKA GAS HANDLING PROJECT
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO (NYSE: ARC) announced today that it has selected California-based Fluor Daniel Inc. as prime fabrication contractor for the $1.5 billion gas handling expansion project to be installed at the Prudhoe Bay oil field on Alaska's North Slope.
The contract, valued at approximately $150 million, involves fabrication of 20 gas compression and miscellaneous modules to be barged to Alaska in mid-1993 and 1994 from the fabrication site at the Port of Iberia in New Iberia, La.
The project, known as GHX-2 (Gas Handling Expansion, Phase 2), is jointly funded by BP (50 percent), ARCO (22 percent), Exxon (22 percent) and others (6 percent). ARCO Alaska Inc., a subsidiary of Los Angeles-based ARCO, is project operator.
Selection of Fluor Daniel Inc., of Irvine, Calif., was based upon a detailed evaluation of cost and performance capability. Fluor Daniel Inc., Fluor's Corp.'s (NYSE: FLR) principal subsidiary, is an international engineering, construction, maintenance, and technical services company with more than 50 offices around the world.
As previously announced, module fabrication in New Iberia will begin in April, 1992, and be completed in mid-1994. Some of the modules will stand as tall as a 6-story building and range in weight from 20 to 5,200 tons.
GHX-2 is critical to the future of the Prudhoe Bay field because as oil production declines the amount of natural gas produced with each barrel of oil increases. GHX-2 will expand the gas handling capability of existing facilities from the current 5.2 billion cubic feet per day to 7.5 billion cubic feet per day. Reinjecting the gas into the reservoir will force additional oil into the wells, increasing daily oil production by about 100,000 barrels per day starting in 1995. An additional 330 to 450 million barrels of oil will be recovered over the life of the Prudhoe Bay field.
Principal owners of the Prudhoe Bay field are BP, ARCO, Exxon, Mobil, Phillips and Chevron.
