 ARCO CONVERTS OJAI OILFIELD PUMPS FROM GAS TO ELECTRICITY;
 RECEIVES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON
 OJAI, Calif., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO Oil and Gas Co. (AOGC) was honored today by Southern California Edison Co. for its environmental and energy conservation efforts in converting 40 oilfield pumping units in the Ojai area from natural gas to electric power.
 The award was presented by Mark Olson, Edison's area manager, to AOGC's Luther Thompson, senior Ojai facility engineer, and production supervisor Andy Marsh.
 AOGC is the Lower 48 exploration and production unit of Los Angeles-based ARCO (NYSE: ARC).
 "Edison was proud to cooperate with this major effort to help improve air quality in Ventura County, and we are pleased to honor ARCO," said Olson.
 The conversion project reduces AOGC's natural gas use by 140,000 cubic feet per day and air emissions by about 21 tons per year.
 The $580,000 project involved replacing the 40 internal combustion engines on the field's pumping wells with cleaner and more efficient electric power motors. The units are used to extract oil from the wells.
 Field construction was contracted to Delta Electric of Saticoy and was completed last November. The project also required laying approximately three miles of power lines over rugged and heavily wooded terrain. Design of the electrical distribution system was by T.J. Cross Engineers of Bakersfield.
 The Ojai oilfield was discovered by an ARCO predecessor company -- Pan American Oil Co. -- in 1910. It produces approximately 520 barrels of crude oil per day. The oil is piped to a gathering center near Casitas and into the Los Angeles basin for refining.
