ARCO CONTRIBUTION HELPS CREATE SEQUIM POLICE BIKE PATROL

SEQUIM, Wash., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The presentation of an ARCO contribution check to the Sequim Police Department today helped realize the dream of a new bike patrol program designed to assist local police officers with greater community outreach as well as crime prevention.
According to Police Sgt. Joel Wasankari, the ARCO contribution of $2,268 represents approximately 75 percent of the program's funding, which will be used to purchase bikes, helmets and other equipment needed to get the patrol up and pedaling. The police department plans to purchase two bikes for use by regular and reserve patrol officers, Wasankari says, providing an opportunity to take some officers out of cars and thereby increase their contact with local citizens as they work to achieve crime prevention. The department typically has one to three police officers on patrol per shift, and while the primary patrol will continue to be by police vehicle, back-up shift operators will now be able to patrol by bike.
ARCO's John Harmon presented the check to Sequim Police Department Chief Russ Barnes during a formal ceremony this morning at the ARCO am/pm mini market and gasoline station at 279 W. Washington (at Third Avenue). Sequim Mayor Ed Beggs, ARCO station manager Gerald Whattam, and other police, city council and ARCO officials also attended.
"ARCO is committed to being involved in the communities where we are allowed the privilege of operating," said Harmon, division manager of PSI Marketing, a subsidiary of ARCO. "The Sequim Police Bike Patrol is a wonderful outreach program that also promotes safety, and we wanted to support this kind of community interaction."
ARCO, the No. 1 marketer of gasoline in the West, is headquartered in Los Angeles, with regional offices in Seattle. The am/pm mini markets and gasoline stations operate under ARCO Products Co., the refining and marketing division of ARCO.
