ARCO CHEMICAL ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ETBE
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO Chemical Company

(NYSE: RCM) announced today that it has reached an agreement in principle with Coastal Refining & Marketing, Inc. (NYSE: CGP) to produce ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) at Coastal's Corpus Christi, Texas, MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) facility.
This facility is currently under long-term lease to ARCO Chemical and is producing up to 12,000 barrels per day of MTBE. The new agreement will allow the flexibility to produce either MTBE or ETBE. A demonstration production run of ETBE is planned for the facility by year end.
Like MTBE, ETBE is a high octane ether-based fuel oxygenate that can be used in gasoline to help reduce emissions from automobiles. However, it uses ethanol in place of methanol as the source of oxygen in the ether. ETBE's lower volatility further assists refiners in making Reformulated Gasoline as required by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment. With its low water solubility, ETBE is a derivative of ethanol that is easy to blend into gasoline at the refinery and expands ethanol's use beyond the common practice of blending it at gasoline terminals.
Marvin O. Schlanger, president of ARCO Chemical Americas Company, said, "ARCO Chemical is developing this product flexibility today to meet the changing needs of its refinery customers and to provide the refining industry with more oxygenate options for producing cleaner burning gasolines in the future. ETBE also provides an environmentally advantageous way of incorporating ethanol into Reformulated Gasoline."
ARCO Chemical is investigating the possible development of ETBE flexibility at all its MTBE facilities world-wide. Future production will be determined by the availability of ethanol supplies and ARCO Chemical's customers' requirements for ETBE. If all of ARCO Chemical's ether capacity were to be converted to ETBE production, it could potentially consume over 400 million gallons per year of ethanol produced from agriculturally grown, renewable resources such as corn.
