ARCO & L.A. CLIPPERS HOST YOUTH RALLY SALUTING 'NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE' PROGRAM THAT REFURBISHED 21 CITY PLAYGROUNDS

/ADVANCE/ LOS ANGELES, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO and the Los Angeles Clippers welcomed more than 3,000 youngsters to the L.A. Sports Arena today for a special rally marking the culmination of "Neighborhood PRIDE," the ARCO/Clippers parks improvement program that has refurbished 33 basketball courts at 21 city playgrounds and brought 26 motivational basketball clinics to more than 4,000 inner- city youths. Today's event also featured the final three games of a citywide youth basketball tournament, another activity revived by Neighborhood PRIDE.
The Neighborhood PRIDE program, coordinated in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, was officially launched last October as a community outreach project following the 1992 civic unrest. Established in the spirit of Rebuild L.A., which endorsed the program, Neighborhood PRIDE has exceeded the original expectations of both ARCO and the Clippers.
"We're pleased that we've been able to bring the PRIDE program to more than 4,000 kids -- that's about 1,000 more than we thought we could reach," said Scott Stanworth, vice president of Retail Marketing for ARCO Products Co., the refining and marketing division of ARCO. "It's motivational sports programs like this that offer youths alternatives."
The PRIDE message was first developed by the NBA, with the acronym "PRIDE" representing: Positive mental attitude, Respect, Intelligent choices, Dreaming dreams and Effort in education. The Clippers and ARCO took that concept one step further to include the playground refurbishing with basketball clinics emphasizing the PRIDE message.
"The Clippers are proud to have been a part of the Neighborhood PRIDE program," said Elgin Baylor, general manager of the Clippers team. "It was our pleasure to be teammates with ARCO as we helped young people in our neighborhoods."
All of the playground refurbishing work was performed under the supervision of minority contractors. Some of the contractors also participate in the minority contractor program for work assignments at ARCO gasoline stations, am/pm mini markets and SMOGPROS express test and repair centers.
The citywide basketball tournament was sponsored over the last three months by ARCO and the Clippers as the final element of the Neighborhood PRIDE program. Twenty-four top teams in existing Recreation and Parks leagues competed in regional contests to determine the top six squads, with those teams then taking part in the final competition for three age groups (9-10, 11-12 and 13-15 years old).
In addition, all of the approximately 4,500 players participating in the leagues were invited to take part in the PRIDE rally held during the tournament's halftime with members of the Clippers team and other television and music group celebrities.
