ARCHETYPE'S INTERSEP TO MANAGE AP/LEAF PHOTOS & CAPTIONS
 FOR NEWSPAPERS' DESKTOP PUBLISHING ENVIRONMENTS
WALTHAM, Mass., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Newspapers now can easily manage the flow of images and captions from the AP/Leaf Electronic Picture Desk right along with other images using a new add-on module to Archetype's InterSep(tm) for desktop publishing networks.
InterSep is image management software for the desktop publishing environment that features accelerated PostScript printing. Its fully automated OPI provides stunning throughput performance. This means papers can realistically manage processing large numbers of images -- even full color -- and placing them in position on production pages.
One of the previous drawbacks to using desktop systems to paginate with images is the huge amount of time it took to output PostScript pages with images. InterSep solves this and improves the performance by almost 700 percent, according to The Seybold Report on Publishing Systems.
The first paper planning to use InterSep with the new AP/Leaf desk option will be The Erie (Penn.) Times. The Times Publishing Co. has contracted integrator CNI, Corp. of Newton, Mass., to install industry-standard networking and desktop publishing equipment to link a DEC editorial system with a Novell network and Macintosh-based page design and color processing workstations.
Managing the AP photos and their captions (when the new AP software is released this fall) is an important factor for the Times. This is a double time-saver for newspapers using AP/Leaf photos. First, the image does not have to be printed by the Leaf system and scanned back into digital form. Second, time is saved by not rekeying the captions and struggling to match them up to the correct photos.
The Times will be using InterSep to handle the flow of images from AP to multiple departments working on the elements before they are merged on a page for output. The photographer/artists will perform color toning on the high-resolution images using Adobe PhotoShop. At the same time, page designers will be using a much smaller, InterSep-generated view file to size and crop the image on screen.
When it's time to print the page, the design workstation is released in seconds and InterSep -- at the server -- automatically replaces the FPOs with the high resolution images to complete the PostScript file. InterSep takes advantage of the 32-bit architecture on the Novell fileserver to speed up creation of the PostScript page.
InterSep, being an open systems product, fits smoothly into today's desktop networks. The open systems approach also lets Archetype quickly develop add-on modules for specific needs in the imaging environment. This gives new flexibility to integrators who specialize in customized applications for connecting existing systems with desktop systems.
Archetype specializes in off-the-shelf and custom productivity software. In addition to InterSep, the company offers Archetype Designer 3.1, a widely-used ad makeup program. InterSep 2.0 began shipping in May, and is available through system integrators as well as direct from Archetype. InterSep is priced from $2,885 and the add-on module to incorporate AP/Leaf photos and captions is $995.
