ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND AND ATON ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR DELIVERY OF $100 MILLION OF FOOD INGREDIENTS TO THE UKRAINE

/ADVANCE/DECATUR, Ill., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) and ATON announced today the signing of a contract for $100 million of food ingredients to be delivered to the Ukraine during the next 12 months. The companies expect various opportunities that can lead to expanded business for both parties, while at the same time increasing the food supply for the Ukrainian people.
ATON is one of the largest private enterprise in the Ukraine, based in Donestsk, Ukraine. It operates through the HIS (formerly the Soviet Union) in a variety of businesses including construction, agri-product processing and retail food products.
According to officials at the announcement today, the initial shipment will include soy protein to be used to enhance the quality and supply of processed meats, as well as soy based milk powder. The soy proteins can increase the meat supply by over 30 percent while decreasing the cost of production. The resulting meat products will also contain reduced fat and calorie content and be more healthy to eat. The whole milk powder replacer is nutritionally equivalent to milk and will be much lower in cost compared to world prices. This will allow economic extension of the fluid milk stream, which can either supply additional fluid milk for consumption or expand the amount of fluid milk use to process dairy products. Future shipments will also include Harvest Burger.
ADM and ATON are also exploring possible arrangements for a technology transfer, as well as potential joint ventures for various food ingredients and products.
Attending the news conference today at ADM headquarters in Decatur, were ADM President Dwayne Andreas, along with Dr. Igor R. Markulov, chief advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, and Chairman of the Council for Alternative Economy, Yuri G. Baskakov.
The Archer Daniels Midland Company, often referred to as "The Supermarket to the World" is the largest agricultural food ingredient processor in the world. ADM processes 128,000 MT (metric tons) of agricultural products per day, or approximately 4.5 million bushels. ADM operates over 130 processing plants in the United States, 148 grain terminals in the U.S. and owns or has ownership interest in 44 foreign manufacturing plants. ADM has investments and operations in over 35 countries and had net revenues of $9.2 billion from all operations in 1992.
