ARC anniversary.

The American-based Society for the Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture (see is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since its foundation, in 1961, ARC has been committed to exploring the rich and complex relationship between religion and the arts in the context of the modern, indeed increasingly 'post-modern', world. Its cultural perspective has always been an avowedly interdisciplinary one, and its past Fellows have included such distinguished figures as Paul Tillich, Margaret Mead, Mircea Eliade, W H Auden, Robert Motherwell and Mies Van der Rohe. The present list contains many who will be equally well-known, both academically and personally, to most readers of 'Art and Christianity'--among them Jane Dillenberger, Frank Burch Brown, Deborah Haynes, John Cook, Terry Dempsey, Robin Jensen, and the UK's own David Jasper. As ARC's younger, European, cousin, we are pleased to offer both our warm congratulations on this anniversary, and to reflect how your own cultural remit, which 'honours, challenges and cultivates the relationship between religion and the arts' is one which we, too, at ACE, unequivocally share and endorse.

Events to mark the 50th anniversary of SARCC include, on 12 May, an evening on 'Theopoetics and Poets: Scott Holland and poetry readings'. In November a jazz concert and exhibition will take place at St Peter's Lutheran Church, the birthplace of the ARC in 1961. More details can be found at
