ARBOR DAY TO BE CELEBRATED APRIL 24 IN PENNSYLVANIA
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Friday, April 24, has been

designated as Arbor Day in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Across the state, members of the Pennsylvania Nurserymen's Association will be conducting tree-planting ceremonies in conjunction with local schools and communities to commemorate this event.
 J. Sterling Morton, who later served as U.S. secretary of Agriculture, began Arbor Day in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. After many years of hard work, he was able to convince the Nebraska legislature of the importance of establishing Arbor Day as a day for planting and emphasizing the importance of trees. In 1940, Edward H. Scanlon, editor and publisher of Tree Magazine, conceived the idea of a National Arbor Day -- the object being to counteract the indifference many people had to the importance of trees.
Trees have always played an important role in history. In various parts of the world in ancient times, there were many superstitions and religious beliefs regarding trees and the spirits which inhabited them. Even today, several cultures believe that certain trees possess spirits and are dangerous to climb or cut down.
Trees benefit the environment by serving as "air purifiers," increasing the monetary and aesthetic values of a home, preventing excessive soil erosion, saving electric bill costs and serving as noise abatement and sight obstruction vehicles.
The Pennsylvania Nurserymen's Association is a non-profit professional trade association dedicated to serving the needs of the nursery, landscape, garden center, grower industries.
